Fresheners and hygiene for malls

A mall has two kinds of space: the open atrium and walkways, and the enclosed rooms around them. Fragrance only works in the second kind. The washrooms are where most complaints start, so they come first.

Public washrooms

A mall washroom on a Sunday sees a steady queue from opening to closing. Put a urinal screen in every urinal. The lemon, citrus mango and apple orchid screens have an anti-splash design, and keeping spares in the store saves a trip when one wears out. At the basins, a stainless steel hand dryer with a sensor handles a queue. The high speed model dries in 10 seconds. Add a soap dispenser per basin and a sanitary bin in every ladies’ cubicle.

For smell, fit an automatic air freshener dispenser on each washroom wall and set the timer shorter than you would in an office. Order dispenser refills at the same time.

Store floors

A store can carry its own scent. A wall-mounted fragrance dispenser near the entrance or the trial rooms does this, and there are more than 30 fragrances to choose from. A clothing store might pick something warm like oudh. A pharmacy or electronics store is better with nothing at all, or a faint citrus.

Stores that want a diffuser rather than a spray can use fragrance oils such as lavender and lemongrass.

Food court

Keep fragrance away from the food counters, where it fights with the cooking. Spend it on the food court washrooms instead, and put a hand sanitizer dispenser at the seating area entrance.
